A working draft

A Digital Pattern Language

A living language for designing digital places that feel alive, written one pattern at a time.

Christopher Alexander gave the built world a language for aliveness: patterns ordinary people could use to make rooms, buildings and towns that feel inhabited rather than imposed. This is a start on the same thing for the places where we now spend most of our waking hours. Each pattern names the tensions in its context, the forces the design applies, what it invites people to do, and the qualities it gives the place. Most of the 23 here were found in work we have built, and each is marked by how much evidence stands behind it.

The words

Every pattern here is written in the same few words: 12 qualities a place can have, 9 acts it can invite, 16 forces a design can apply, and 7 scales it can work at. They are few on purpose, and they change only by deliberate decision. Learn them and each pattern in the library reads as a sentence.

12 around one

Qualities

What a place can have. Alexander believed every living place shares one quality that no word quite names. These twelve are the ways we have found to point at it. None of them can be scored. Each can be audited, by asking its question of a real place and answering honestly.

Something Without A Name

There is something here we can come into contact with without a name.

Alexander called it the quality without a name. We call it SWAN. The twelve circle it; none of them is it.

Alive

The thing feels inhabited, not performed-for.

AskDoes it carry the marks of the people who use it, or only of the people who made it?

3 patterns serve it

Present

The tool steps back so the work, conversation, or relationship can step forward.

AskWhile someone uses it, where does their attention go: to the tool, or through it?

4 patterns serve it

Dignified

Treats the user as an adult with their own purposes.

AskWould you speak to a person face to face the way this speaks to its user?

11 patterns serve it

Spacious

Has room. Negative space, slow loading, pauses between actions.

AskWhere can the eye, and the mind, rest?

6 patterns serve it

Honest

The surface tells the truth about the system.

AskIs there anything the system does that the surface would rather you didn't notice?

16 patterns serve it

Unhurried

Does not rush you. Does not punish slowness.

AskWhat happens to someone who goes slowly?

5 patterns serve it

Gift

Offered rather than extracted. Abundance rather than scarcity.

AskWho benefits from each thing it asks of people, and do they know?

5 patterns serve it

Equitable

Fair in who it serves and who it costs. No one pays for someone else's ease.

AskWho carries the cost of this ease?

7 patterns serve it

Harmonious

Its parts and the acts it invites agree with one another. Nothing fights anything else.

AskDoes any part work against another, or against what the place invites?

3 patterns serve it

Generative

It makes more life than it uses. People leave able to make, and the thing grows new forms through use.

AskWhat can people make after using it that they couldn't make before?

3 patterns serve it

Beautiful

Made with care you can feel: proportion, material and detail are right.

AskWhere does the care show, down to the smallest detail?

3 patterns serve it

Effective

It does what it's for. Aliveness that doesn't work is decoration.

AskDoes it do what it's for, as judged by the people it's for?

Acts

Most products are built around a short list of verbs, and measured by them. This language asks what else a place can invite a person to do.

What the design does · 16 axes

Forces

Each force is one end of an axis, and neither end is good or bad on its own: an interruption can save a life or sell a webinar. The axes sit in four dimensions, Matter, Intelligence, Space and Time, and those four are the only things on this page that earn color.

How a verb becomes a force

  1. The design is the subject. The page does it to a person, their attention, their time. If the person does it, it is an act.
  2. It has an opposite. Forces come in pairs. The axis is the primitive, and each end of it is a force.
  3. It has a dial. It can be applied gently or hard. An interruption for a fire alarm is not one for a newsletter.
  4. It is neutral without context. A verb that is good or bad everywhere, like manipulate or uplift, is a verdict about how forces land.
  5. It doesn't break down. Convert is pull plus pressure at a threshold: a composite that patterns use, not a primitive.

Each mark below is a pattern applying a force: left of center toward one end, right toward the other, farther out the stronger. 10 of the 16 axes are already worked in both directions, by different patterns in different contexts. Where a dial is sparse or one-sided, the next patterns are waiting.

Scales

Each pattern works at one scale, inside larger patterns and around smaller ones. Alexander's language ran from regions down to the details of a room; this one runs from ecosystems down to the feel of a single moment.

  1. Ecosystem Relationships across many products, platforms, and people. 2 patterns
  2. Platform A single platform's life and limits. 3 patterns
  3. Product A coherent application or service. 8 patterns
  4. Space A single screen, page, channel, or room. 3 patterns
  5. Component A reusable element of a space. 5 patterns
  6. Interaction A single exchange between person and system. 1 pattern
  7. Micromoment Sub-second feel, motion, feedback, haptic, sound. 1 pattern

How a pattern reads

In this context, holding these tensions, the design applies these forces so people can do these acts, and the place gains these qualities.

Tensions
The conflicting needs in a context. Alexander called these forces; a pattern without them is decoration.
Forces
What the design does, each force one end of an axis and none good or bad on its own.
Acts
What a person does: witness, sit with, return, cocreate.
Qualities
What the place gains. Twelve, around one that has no name; audited, never scored.

Evidence

  • Named Named, not yet written.
  • Seed Named and articulated, not yet built by us.
  • Tried Built or prototyped in one of our projects.
  • Recurring Built in two or more of our projects, in different contexts.
  • Grounded Recurring, and confirmed by the people who live inside the work.

A pattern earns its standing by being built. Recurring means built in two of our projects, in different contexts; grounded is kept for patterns confirmed by the people who live inside the work, not only the people who made it. Nothing is grounded yet.

What the language refuses

Antipatterns, named alongside the patterns that answer them. The ones still unanswered are where the next patterns are waiting.

Named, not yet answered

  • A form that contradicts its claim "A site whose form contradicts its claim has no quality without a name."
  • Action disharmony A space designed for one action and against three others is at war with itself.
  • Confirmshaming manipulating the language of "no" to shame users out of the choice
  • Format lock-in exporting your data is technically possible but practically useless
  • Notification capture Pressure stays on the object, not in your inbox.
  • Performance pressure The pull toward performing aliveness rather than enacting it.
  • Read-receipt pressure making the absence of response visible to coerce response
  • Tastefulness "The failure mode here is not ugliness. It is tastefulness."
  • The atomized user Software that only knows individuals, so the space between people has no one in it.
  • The steward as copy-paste machine Reposting is the steward's invisible labor.
  • Visibility coercion "last active" text over live presence dots, especially client-facing

Where it leans

This draft protects more than it generates. 16 patterns serve honest; 3 serve alive. Most of what we have built so far is trust tooling, so the next patterns are aimed at aliveness: drawn from Alexander, from nature, and from work that isn't ours.

Suggest a pattern

This language is meant to be written by more than one person. Suggest a pattern you have seen work, a change to one here, or an antipattern we have missed.

23 patterns, written in plain text and compiled on 2026-10-12. Drafted with Claude from James's projects and conversations; James decides what enters the language.
