Magnitude Without Rank

How much is visible; who gave more is not.

In a place where amounts pass between people, holding the tension between amount needing to be felt and scoring people by it creating shame and debt, the design reveals magnitude, grounds it in what it does, and mixes rather than sorts the people behind it. People can then contribute at any scale and witness what flowed, and the place gains dignified, equitable, gift and honest.

Context

Any place where an amount moves: a gift form, a ledger between partners, a record of what crossed a bridge. It links up to the quality dignified directly, in TrustFlow's definition: "Nobody is ranked, shamed or watched." Signal, Never Downvote sits beside it, and The Knot ("nothing counts up") below it. Marshall Rosenberg, the thinker the DPL is adding for his view of money (decision 8), belongs on its reading list.

Tensions

  • Amount matters and should be felt. A small gift is real, and a bridge that only flows one way is worth noticing.
  • Sorting or scoring people by amount creates shame, debt and comparison: "Scores and leaderboards turn gifts into obligations."
  • A bare number or a blank field loses the tangible connection that gives a small amount its dignity.
  • Hidden: an organization wants its largest givers seen, and recognition is a tier by another name.

Forces the design applies

  • reveal on reveal ↔ obscurehow much: an amount shown as position, width or a named outcome
  • mix on sort ↔ mixpeople: never ordered, tiered or set against each other by amount
  • ground on abstract ↔ groundevery amount, tied to something tangible it does or carries

Solution

Show how much, continuously and tied to what it does or carries. Never turn the amount into a person's place in a line.

The generative parameter is what the magnitude is tied to, and who sees it. ReVillage ties each position to a named local outcome ("A bench at Town Square") and shows it only to the person choosing. TrustFlow ties it to what crossed and shows it only to the two sides of a bridge, as width. Neither shows a list of people ordered by amount. The input form is the child Sliding Scale of Belonging; the display form is Two-Strand Thread.

 tiers: [ $25 ] [ $100 ] [ $500 ] [ $1k ] you pick a class
scale: ○━━━━━━━━━━━━●━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━○ you pick an amount
                  "A bench at Town Square"
 thread: ════════════════ what you sent
──────────────── what came back seen, never ranked

Acts

  • Strengthens: contribute (at any scale, including small), witness (seeing what flowed each way).
  • Weakens: buy: a gift reshaped as buying a tier.
  • Gap this surfaced: TrustFlow's strengthened act reciprocate has no place on the list, and neither does the act this pattern most weakens: compare, or keeping score.

Qualities it gives the place

DignifiedEquitableGiftHonest

Refuses

  • Tier-Sort Tiered options that require users to publicly declare which worth-class they belong to.
  • Leaderboards Scores and leaderboards turn gifts into obligations.
  • Abstraction pull The pull toward abstract framings that lose tangible local impact.

McLuhan check

  • Enhances: the dignity of a small amount; reciprocity you can see.
  • Retrieves: flow maps where width is quantity; the sliding-scale fee.
  • Obsolesces: tier buttons, donor walls, leaderboards.
  • Reverses into: rank by the back door. Set magnitudes side by side across people and they become a score again: a thick strand next to a thin one reads as a ranking. Recognition creeps in at the top. ReVillage's highest positions name rooms and say "Joins the dozens holding the deep core", the rings its own brief pulled off the homepage because they sorted visitors.

Required companion: magnitude is shown to the person it belongs to, or to the two parties it passed between, never as a public ordering of people. Where color carries direction (TrustFlow's gold and teal), Color Is Earned holds.

Connections

Seen in

  • ReVillage: "Pick your scale." "Whatever you give lands somewhere specific in the work. Slide to see what your contribution does."
  • TrustFlow: "Draw each bridge as two strands: gold for what you sent, teal for what came back, each as thick as what flowed. Asymmetry is visible but never ranked."

In nature Tree rings: each year is laid down as wide as that year's growth allowed, and a thin ring records a hard year without marking it as failure.

Recurring. (two of our projects). The tension is a firm match; the configuration is a medium one, because one is an input and the other a display. Not yet grounded.
