Kinds Are Shapes
You know what a thing is before you read it, and its color is still free to say something else.
On a surface where many kinds of thing live together, holding the tension between telling kinds apart and keeping color for the one meaning that earned it, the design reveals kind through shape and keeps color quiet. People can notice what kind each thing is and discover what is there without opening anything, and the place gains honest, equitable and beautiful.
Context
A component-scale child of Signal Is Scarce. It is the sibling that makes Color Is Earned possible: color can only be rationed once kind has somewhere else to live.
Tensions
- Many kinds share one surface, and people need to tell them apart.
- Color is the easiest channel for kind, but it is needed for the one meaning that earned it.
- Labels are exact, but they cost reading time on every row.
- Hidden: every new shape is something to learn, and too many shapes become a language nobody asked for.
Forces the design applies
- reveal on reveal ↔ obscurekind, through a consistent glyph or silhouette
- quiet on amplify ↔ quietcolor, kept off kind entirely
- sort on sort ↔ mixkinds told apart without being ranked or separated
Solution
Give each kind its own shape, the same everywhere it appears, so kind is read by form and color stays free.
The test, from Collab OS: "If every kind is recognisable at 40px without reading a word, the language works. If it isn't, we have colour-coded rectangles."
The generative parameter is the shape family. Related kinds should rhyme. TrustFlow: "A need is an open cup; an offer is the same curve, filled and turned over."
◯ need ◠ offer △ event □ document (color says only: arriving · leaving)
Acts
- Strengthens: discover (what's here, at a glance), witness, notice (kind is read by form, before a word).
- Weakens: click, in the sense of opening things just to learn what they are.
- Notice joined the acts on 10/10; this was one of five patterns asking for it.
Qualities it gives the place
HonestEquitableBeautifulEffective
Refuses
- Misleading visual hierarchy the client view must not style reassurance over truth
McLuhan check
- Enhances: speed of recognition; works for people who can't see the hue.
- Retrieves: heraldry, road signs, map symbols.
- Obsolesces: color legends, and type labels on every row.
- Reverses into: icon soup, so many shapes that the surface becomes hieroglyphics.
Required companion: keep the kind set small (about six or fewer), and let related kinds share a shape family.
