Stable Ground

Things stay where you put them, and change shows on the thing, not in where it is.

In a spatial surface people return to, holding the tension between fresh data wanting to rearrange the view and spatial memory needing positions to hold still, the design anchors every position a person chose and reveals change on the object itself. People can then return and find things where they left them, sit with the work and witness what changed, and the place gains dignified, honest and unhurried.

Context

Any surface a person arranges by hand and comes back to: a canvas, a board, a node graph. It sits under One Substrate, Many Lenses; the research behind both is one image, the city-builder, "one stable spatial substrate, many togglable data lenses over the same map." It doesn't apply to lenses the data arranges: on a timeline a thing should move when its date moves.

Tensions

  • Fresh data wants to rearrange the view.
  • Spatial memory needs positions to hold still. You remember where you put a thing, not where a layout put it.
  • Change still has to be seen. A view that never moves can hide that anything happened.
  • Hidden: automatic layout looks intelligent, and it saves storing anyone's positions.

Forces the design applies

  • anchor on anchor ↔ reflowevery position a person chose; the machine places only what has no place yet
  • reveal on reveal ↔ obscurechange, shown on the object itself: fill, bleed, halo, dimming
  • sustain on interrupt ↔ sustainattention across a change of lens: transitions animate, nothing teleports

Solution

Where a thing is belongs to whoever put it there. Data never moves it: change shows on the object, and the machine places only what has no place yet.

The generative parameter is which channel carries change. Collab OS spends status fill, a status-color bleed and a time halo, the meanings that earned color there. Weft dims every node that reaches no output. Each context also decides who arranges: a hand-arranged lens holds still, and a lens the data arranges is meant to move.

  ○ brief ● site ○ brief ◉ site ← site: its halo changed
       ○ copy ● copy ← copy: filled in place
nothing moved, so you still know where everything is

Acts

  • Strengthens: return (things are where you left them), sit-with (nothing jumps while you look), witness (change is visible, not hidden by stillness).
  • Weakens: none of the dominant verbs directly. What it removes is hunting, re-finding what a layout moved.
  • Gap this surfaced: orient, knowing where you are and where things are. TrustFlow's Your Seat at the Center asks for the same verb ("Strengthens: orient, explore").

Qualities it gives the place

DignifiedHonestUnhurried

Refuses

  • The hairball Network maps are hairballs seen from nowhere.

McLuhan check

  • Enhances: spatial memory, and an arrangement that says something by itself.
  • Retrieves: the desk, the pinboard, the memory palace.
  • Obsolesces: auto-layout, and "sort by last updated" as the only arrangement a surface has.
  • Reverses into: a fossil, a map nobody dares tidy that stopped saying anything. Or stillness that hides change, when the object's channels are too faint to see.

Required companion: a tidy that is asked for, never imposed (Collab OS's snap grid, Weft's layout op), and change channels strong enough to be seen.

Connections

Seen in

  • Collab OS (July note): "user-placed positions persist; data changes express through the object (color, fill, pulse), not through its location; transitions animate."
  • *Collab OS (research 06, Spatial Interfaces for Work):* "Practical rules: persist positions, animate transitions between view models (don't teleport), let users hand-place."
  • Collab OS (September): "Coordinates live only in surface_items. Status changes show as fill, bleed and halo, never as the item moving."
  • Weft: assistant edits apply with "auto-layout for coordless nodes", the editor "dims every node/wire that reaches no sink", and the layout op "answers "tidy the loom" in one line" only when asked.

In nature A forest's landmarks hold still while the season changes on them. A tree turns color where it stands, and jays and nutcrackers find their caches months later by landmarks that haven't moved.

Recurring. (two projects). Collab OS named and built it. Weft built the same configuration without naming it; it turned up on close reading. "Transitions animate" is the thinnest clause: the September page says motion between lenses and rungs is not yet decided.
