It Left, but Still Has a Home

It has left, but it still has a home.

In a shared surface or network where things move, holding the tension between work needing to travel and travel erasing origin, the design connects each thing to where it came from with a visible tie, and lets that tie persist. People can then return along it and cocreate without losing their place, and the place gains honest, dignified and effective.

Context

Anywhere things move after they're made: an action pulled out of its initiative onto a canvas, an event passed beyond the bridge it arrived on. The Ghost Slot (Collab OS) is the spatial form; Pass Along (TrustFlow) is the social one. Its sibling Show the Route answers "why am I seeing this?" and this one answers "where does this belong?" TrustFlow's path answers both, which is where they overlap.

Tensions

  • Work wants to move to where it's needed, and good things want to reach further than where they started.
  • Moving a thing erases where it came from, and resharing strips context and consent.
  • Meaning and trust depend on the origin: what it belonged to, who sent it, who passed it on.
  • Hidden: an origin can turn into a leash, and work that can never really leave isn't free to move.

Forces the design applies

  • connect on connect ↔ severa visible tie between the thing and its origin
  • persist on persist ↔ fadethe tie, until someone cuts it on purpose: a slot left at home, or a path the thing carries
  • reveal on reveal ↔ obscurewhere it came from and who moved it, at a glance or on asking

Solution

When something moves, keep a visible tie to where it came from: a mark left at the origin, or the origin carried on the thing. The tie can be cut on purpose, never by accident.

Each context decides where the tie lives and who may cut it. Collab OS draws it at both ends (a ghost row at home, a line to the card), and the mover can release it: "Double-click the ghost to release the connection." TrustFlow puts it on the thing as its path, and the sender decides beforehand whether it may travel at all. Only a real move earns the tie: a second view of an action is not a move, "so only the pull earns a ghost and a wire."

Acts

  • Strengthens: return (follow the line back home), cocreate (work spreads over a shared surface without losing its place), witness (see who passed it and from where).
  • Weakens: share, in the stripped, viral sense (TrustFlow weakens "go viral").
  • Gap this surfaced: no act for relay, passing something on with your name behind it (TrustFlow's "pass along" and "vouch"). Contribute and share both miss it.

Refuses

  • Memory disenfranchisement the studio's history (timelines, artifacts, decisions) must remain exportable; we are the platform now
  • Context-stripped resharing resharing strips context and consent

McLuhan check

  • Enhances: work that can move freely; reach with trust still attached.
  • Retrieves: the archivist's out-card; the letter of introduction carried by hand.
  • Obsolesces: copy and paste, and the screenshot that strips its source.
  • Reverses into: ghost clutter, a home full of dashed rows nobody returns to. Or a leash, where the origin claims ownership. A long path also exposes everyone who touched a thing; TrustFlow's sketched grant caps onward travel at one hop.

Required companion: release is always possible and never destructive (Collab OS: deleting the line "clears only the provenance (the card stays, membership unchanged)"). In the social form, the origin consents first; see Deliberate Release.

Connections

Seen in

  • Collab OS: "A ghost slot stays behind in the initiative", "its status dot reduced to a small solid point on the row's right edge ("this is the action's home")." The live surface draws "per-INSTANCE lines from the ghost row on the source card to the pulled instance."
  • TrustFlow: "Pass something to your own bridges only if the sender's membrane allows onward travel. It carries the path and your signal. Intros never pass." The prototype confirms each pass: "Passed along to [n] communities, carrying the path."
