The Container Speaks Once
Say it once, at the level that holds it, and let each part say only what is its own.
In a surface of nested things, holding the tension between each card wanting to stand alone and repetition burying what's new, the design quiets every fact the container already states and lets the container's grouping say it once. People can then notice and witness what differs between siblings and sit with a dense surface, and the place gains spacious, harmonious and effective.
Context
Any surface where things sit inside other things: rows in a group, cards on a client's surface, people in a column, pages under a nav. It completes Signal Is Scarce alongside Color Is Earned. Both treat the reader's attention as a budget: Color Is Earned budgets hue, and this pattern budgets words.
Tensions
- Each card wants to stand alone. It may be met on a canvas, in a list, in search, on its own.
- Repetition buries what's new. Rows that each repeat their parent's name hide the one row that differs.
- A dropped fact must still be findable when the card is read away from its container.
- Hidden: it's cheaper to render every field everywhere than to read the context.
Forces the design applies
- quiet on amplify ↔ quietevery fact the container already states
- sort on sort ↔ mixthe container: it groups by the shared fact, so its edge says it once
- reveal on reveal ↔ obscurethe same fact, as soon as the card leaves the container that stated it
Solution
Never render a fact the container already states. The card reads its context, drops what is already said, and says it again as soon as it leaves.
The generative parameter is what the container states, and each context decides it. An initiative states its name, so its rows drop the initiative chip. A person's column states the assignee. A client's surface states the client. In a sitemap the parent is a solid wire, so "in nav" is never a checkbox. One card renders differently in each place, and that is the point.

Acts
- Strengthens: witness (what differs between siblings is what you see), sit-with (a dense surface stays calm because it is ordered, not because it is sparse), notice (the one row that differs stands out).
- Weakens: none of the dominant verbs directly. What it removes is skimming, the eye sliding past rows that all look alike.
- Notice joined the acts on 10/10; this was one of five patterns asking for it.
Qualities it gives the place
SpaciousHarmoniousEffective
Refuses
- Noise as density A surface crowded with repeated facts, passed off as a rich one.
- Calm-as-empty-whitespace Emptiness passed off as calm: the inverse failure of noise as density.
McLuhan check
- Enhances: what's new at each level, and one card that works in every context.
- Retrieves: the table's column header and the book's running head, print's ways of stating a shared fact once.
- Obsolesces: the self-sufficient card that carries every field everywhere, and one card variant per context.
- Reverses into: riddles. When too much is left to the container, a card met alone (a screenshot, a search result, a shared link) loses the fact it leaned on.
Required companion: dropped from sight is not dropped from meaning. The fact must come back wherever the container isn't visible, including for a screen reader moving card by card (equitable). The grammar covers the canvas; the screen reader isn't written down yet.

- Collab OS (card grammar, Rule C): "Same principle in two domains: never say twice what is already said once. A task inside an initiative card doesn't repeat the initiative. A task in a person's column doesn't repeat the assignee. This is the
contextargument." - Collab OS (branch contract, Rule 1): "A card on a client's surface doesn't repeat the client. This is the reason one card works in every context; it is not an optimisation."
- Collab OS (sitemap plan): "'in nav' is never a checkbox on the card; it's the existence of a solid wire, so map and truth can't drift apart."
