Signal Is Scarce
Every mark on the surface spends some of the reader's attention. Spend it only where it pays.
On any surface people return to and read at a glance, holding the tension between the wish to show everything and the reader's limited attention, the design quiets what the context already says and spends attract only on what changed or matters now. People can then notice what changed, witness the state of things and sit-with the work, and the place gains present, spacious and honest.
Context
A product-scale pattern. It sets the economy that every component on the surface lives inside: boards, feeds, dashboards, queues, long reading pages. It is the parent of every pattern that rations a channel of attention.
Tensions
- Completeness: every element wants to carry everything it knows, so it can stand alone.
- Attention is finite, and every repeated fact, color, badge or count spends some of it.
- What matters most (a change, a deadline, a direction) is often the smallest thing present.
- Hidden: density looks like value, and a quiet surface can look unfinished. Collab OS answers this directly: "Calm means ordered, not sparse."
Forces the design applies

Solution
Treat the reader's attention as a budget. Before any mark is added, ask what it costs and what it earns. Whatever the context already says is not said again.
The generative parameter is the currency, and each child budgets a different one:
- color (Color Is Earned)
- repetition (The Container Speaks Once)
- the channel that tells kinds apart (Kinds Are Shapes)
- motion (Motion Means Change, unwritten)

- Enhances: legibility at a glance, and trust that what stands out matters.
- Retrieves: the editor's cut, and the telegram paid by the word.
- Obsolesces: badge counts, red dots, "everything is important".
- Reverses into: minimalism as a style, a sparse page instead of an ordered one. Or hiding what people need ("where did it go?").
Required companion: whatever is quieted stays one step away. Obscure is gentle here, never a wall.
