A Page Is a Place
A page you can be in, not a chute you are pushed down.
On a page that strangers arrive at, holding the tension between orienting them fast and giving them somewhere worth staying, the design relaxes pressure, makes room, and pulls gently with one low-stakes invitation. People can witness, discover and sit-with what is there, then return, and the place gains spacious, unhurried and dignified.
Context
A space-scale parent. Its children decide what kind of place a given page is: a doorway (Portal Threshold), a reading room (A Read, Not a Funnel), a notebook (Field Notes Stream). The way out is Permission to Leave.
Tensions
- A page must orient a stranger in seconds and offer a next step.
- It must also be somewhere worth staying, or nothing beyond it will be trusted.
- Landing pages usually resolve this by sacrificing the second to the first.
- Hidden: a page that refuses all direction loses clarity. In PSME, James liked how directions C and D broke from stacked sections, but asked for the clarity and color of A and B back. The place still needs signage.
Forces the design applies
- relax on pressure ↔ relaxno countdowns, no stacked asks
- expand on expand ↔ contractroom around the center; silence as structure
- pull on pull ↔ pushone low-stakes invitation inward
- release on attract ↔ releaseno attention hooks between the threshold and the way out
Solution
Shape the page as a place, with a threshold, a center and a way out. Let the one invitation be low-stakes, and let orientation come from the structure rather than from repeated asks.
The generative parameter is what kind of place: a doorway, a reading room, a notebook, a gallery. That choice sets the children.
threshold → center (room to stay) → way out (come back)
▲ one low-stakes invitation, not three CTAsActs
- Strengthens: witness, discover, sit-with, return.
- Weakens: scroll, signup, and click in the conversion sense.

Refuses
- Conversion craft The accumulated craft of optimizing a page for transactional outcomes.
- Last-CTA pressure One more ask at the bottom of every page, so leaving always feels like failing.
- AI-default tropes What a model reaches for unasked: the centered eyebrow hero with two pills, hover-lift cards, frosted nav, a gradient band to close.
McLuhan check
- Enhances: dwelling, trust, the sense of arriving somewhere.
- Retrieves: the entrance of a building, the reading room, the journal masthead.
- Obsolesces: the funnel and the hero-plus-two-pills.
- Reverses into: preciousness, a beautiful page nobody can act on. That is the PSME lesson.
Required companion: the way in and the next step stay legible within seconds (effective).

- ReVillage: "A homepage that frames itself as a doorway, not a billboard." Built in the prototype home hero.
- PSME (prototype): "the page is a READ, not a funnel — single justified column … quiet text links, no buttons." This was partly walked back for clarity.

Tried. Built once in ReVillage; PSME was a second, partial attempt whose correction taught the companion rule. Named as a parent on 10/10, from a near miss in the harvest.
