Permission to Leave
The end is marked, and leaving is part of the design.
At the end of a page or a day's work, holding the tension between a system that wants to keep going and a person who needs to stop, the design releases attention, relaxes the pressure that usually peaks there, and gently interrupts the flow with a visible end. People can return another day and sit-with what they read or finished, and the place gains unhurried, dignified and spacious.
Context
Wherever an experience could go on forever, or ends at its point of highest pressure: the bottom of a long page, a feed, an inbox, a queue of things to decide. The Collab OS July note gave the aim in one line: "it succeeds when people leave it confidently".
Tensions
- The system wants to keep going: page-end is "where conversion pressure peaks", and "Things keep arriving."
- "A steward needs to finish and go back to their own work."
- People at the end are "cognitively depleted and less able to make good decisions."
- Hidden: engagement metrics count staying as success, so nothing is built to end.
Forces the design applies
- release on attract ↔ releaseattention, at the end of the page or the queue
- relax on pressure ↔ relaxthe place where conversion or arrival pressure usually peaks
- contract on expand ↔ contractthe list: only what needs the person, then an end
- interrupt on interrupt ↔ sustainone visible mark that breaks the endless flow
Solution
Design the ending. Mark it plainly, say that stopping is legitimate, and put nothing after it that asks for anything.
The generative parameter is what the end says, and what may sit after it. ReVillage closes a reading page with a quiet line, set small and often italic, and a few soft-step links "without the asking-shape". TrustFlow closes a work queue: "Today lists only what needs a human decision, then ends with a mark", with what agents handled summarized after it. Both answer the second question alike: nothing after the end needs a decision.
...only what needs you ──────────── ◆ That's everything for today. ──────────── after the end: a summary, a way back, no asks
Acts
- Strengthens: return (the close invites another day, not a decision now), sit-with (nothing pulls you past what you just read).
- Weakens: scroll, and click on the last call to action.
- Gap this surfaced: rest and finish (ReVillage named rest; TrustFlow finish, rest). The list has return for coming back, and nothing for stopping well.
Qualities it gives the place
UnhurriedDignifiedSpacious
Refuses
- Infinite scroll no natural stopping point; the body reaches for "the end" that never comes
- Endless feed content is generated on demand to keep you, not just paginated
- Conversion craft The accumulated craft of optimizing a page for transactional outcomes.
- Streak and engagement mechanics this app should want less of the team's attention, not more; it succeeds when people leave it confidently
McLuhan check
- Enhances: rest, and the feeling of having finished.
- Retrieves: the printed edition, closing time, the dismissal at the end of a service.
- Obsolesces: infinite scroll and the last-chance CTA.
- Reverses into: a performed ending, a "you're all caught up" with more feed waiting under it (Instagram later placed suggested posts below its own caught-up mark). Or an ending that hides what still needs you.
Required companion: the end is honest in both directions. Nothing after it asks for anything ("Nothing below needs a decision."), and nothing that does need the person is pushed past it (honest).

- ReVillage (prototype): "This might be enough for today. The work will be here when you come back." And on Get Involved: "No need to decide today. Bookmark, breathe, come back when something fits."
- TrustFlow (v2 prototype): "That's everything for today." When nothing was waiting: "You're through for today." Under the mark: "New things arrive when trusted communities publish. Nothing below needs a decision."
- Collab OS (an aim, not built): "this app should want less of the team's attention, not more; it succeeds when people leave it confidently".

In nature Dusk: the day has an edge, and most living things keep a rhythm of activity and rest.
Recurring. (two projects, both prototypes). The two configurations differ (a page against a queue); the move is the same.
