Summary, Not Data
The commons sees that it is working, without seeing anyone's records.
In a network of communities that needs to see its own value, holding the tension between that value needing to be seen and members' details belonging to their community, the design reveals totals, keeps every record where it lives and abstracts whatever crosses into counts. People can then witness the commons working and commune in what they made together, and the place gains honest, dignified and gift.
Context
Any federation, network or coalition that has to prove its value (to itself, to funders, to the next community deciding whether to join) without becoming the place where everyone's data pools. It lives inside Bridges, Not a Hub: each bridge keeps its own ledger, and a community that leaves takes its bridges' records with it.
Tensions
- The value of a network is geometric, and people need to see it to believe it.
- Members' details belong to their community.
- Data law differs by place.
- Hidden: proving value usually means pooling data, and pooled data becomes the platform's asset.
Forces the design applies
- reveal on reveal ↔ obscurethe totals: events shared, seats filled, intros made, funding raised
- decentralize on centralize ↔ decentralizethe records: each stays with the community that holds it
- abstract on abstract ↔ groundwhat travels: a count, never a person; large member counts are rounded
- persist on persist ↔ fadethe ledger: it outlasts a resting bridge
Solution
Let totals travel and keep records home. Each bridge keeps a ledger of counts, so the commons can see that it works without seeing anyone in it.
The generative parameter is which totals count, and each context decides it. TrustFlow counts events shared, seats filled, intros made and funding raised, per bridge and per direction, and shows the commons a community's size only as "members, rounded". Another network might count meals served or hours given. The pattern fixes only the direction of travel: counts go out, records stay.

totals travel; names don'tActs
- Strengthens: witness (the commons sees its value truthfully), commune (a shared sense of what was made together).
- Weakens: none of the dominant verbs. What it weakens is surveil, which isn't an act; it's the force gone wrong (metrics as surveillance).
- Gap this surfaced: celebrate, and account in the sense of giving an account of value. TrustFlow names both ("Strengthens: witness, celebrate, account"); neither is on the list.
Qualities it gives the place

Refuses
- Metrics as surveillance Counting what people do and showing it back to someone else as oversight.
- Memory disenfranchisement the studio's history (timelines, artifacts, decisions) must remain exportable; we are the platform now
McLuhan check
- Enhances: a network's sense of its own worth; proof without exposure.
- Retrieves: the census, which publishes totals and seals the records.
- Obsolesces: the pooled CRM as proof of impact, and the funder's request for participant lists.
- Reverses into: a scoreboard, when totals laid side by side across bridges become a ranking of communities. Or re-identification, when a total is small enough to be one person.
Required companion: a floor under small numbers, and no league table. TrustFlow keeps each ledger on its own bridge and rounds member counts over a hundred; smaller counts, a single intro or a single seat, still show exactly.

Seen in
- TrustFlow (patterns, #4): "Bridges keep a ledger of totals (events shared, seats filled, intros made, funding moved). Totals travel; records stay home."
- TrustFlow (prototype): "Totals only. Records stay with each community." "No member records leave [the community]. Totals are shared so the commons can see that it works; records stay home." When a bridge rests: "The ledger stays."
- Near miss, Holos (Community Pulse demo): "aggregate data only, no individual member is identified". It has the display half, but its records already sit pooled in one platform, so "records stay home" has nothing to do there.

Precedents the census: totals published, individual records sealed (72 years in the US) · small-cell suppression in public-health statistics · differential privacy (Dwork et al., 2006; used for the 2020 US Census)
In nature Quorum sensing: bacteria sense how many of them there are from the concentration of a shared signal molecule, and act together on it, without any one cell being known.
Tried. Built in one prototype. The Holos demo shares the move without the tension, so it doesn't make this recurring.
