Signal, Never Downvote

You add trust by standing behind something. Silence is the only negative.

In a commons where communities curate for each other, holding the tension between curation needing judgment and public negative judgment harming people, the design attracts attention only to what someone stood behind and gives negative judgment no public channel at all. People can then contribute their judgment and cocreate the commons's sense of what is good, and the place gains dignified, gift and honest.

Context

A network where people or communities recommend things to each other: events, offers, intros. It works because of its parent, Bridges, Not a Hub: "Signals come only from communities you trust." A positive-only signal from strangers gets gamed; one that travels only along bridges two stewards opened together means something.

Tensions

  • Curation needs judgment. Somebody has to say "this one is good".
  • Public negative judgment harms people and invites retaliation. A downvote lands on a person, not a post.
  • Silence costs nothing and says enough.
  • Hidden: a platform wants negative signals as data, because outrage and ranking drive engagement.

Forces the design applies

  • attract on attract ↔ releasewhat a trusted community stood behind: a glint, its name, an optional line on why
  • obscure on reveal ↔ obscurenegative judgment: no public channel exists for it; setting aside is private and the sender is never told
  • quiet on amplify ↔ quietwhatever nobody signaled: kept quiet, never marked down

Solution

Let the only public judgment be a signal of support, with an optional line on why. Give it no opposite. Not signaling is the negative: it costs nothing, and it stays private.

The generative parameter is what a signal means and what it carries. In TrustFlow it means standing behind something; it carries your community's name and an optional line; it travels only along trusted bridges; and a receiving steward may choose to see only what was signaled. Each context decides who may signal, whether a reason is asked for, and how far a signal goes. The one thing no context may add is an opposite.

Acts

  • Strengthens: contribute (judgment offered as a gift), cocreate (the commons curates itself, community by community).
  • Weakens: react (nothing to pile on), like (a signal isn't a count; it has a name and a reason).
  • Gap this surfaced: vouch, to stand behind something with your name. Contribute loses the stake. TrustFlow's own list names it ("Strengthens: vouch, recommend").

Qualities it gives the place

DignifiedGiftHonest

Refuses

  • Outrage gradients UI affordances tuned to surface high-arousal content
  • Dignity erosion The family that treats people as less than adults: shaming, ranking, coercing, watching.

McLuhan check

  • Enhances: trust carried by people who stand behind things.
  • Retrieves: the letter of reference and the personal introduction. You write one only for someone you can vouch for.
  • Obsolesces: the star rating, the downvote, the public review of a person.
  • Reverses into: inflation, when signals are free and everything gets one. Or a closed circle, when silence falls hardest on newcomers nobody knows yet, and only the already-trusted get seen.

Required companion: a private route for real harm. Silence is enough for "not for us"; it isn't enough for "this hurt someone". TrustFlow covers the first (set aside, and the sender "is not told") and leaves the second open: "If an intro goes badly, how does that reflect on the stewards who vouched, without anyone downvoting a person?"
