Meet Before You Flow
Before anything flows between two groups, the two people who hold them have talked.
Where groups can connect on a platform, holding the tension between growth that wants instant connection and trust that is built face to face, the design slows the one-click connect, grounds each connection in a real conversation, and lets the date of it persist. People commune before they cocreate, and the place gains alive, honest and unhurried.
Context
A platform whose connections carry weight: once open, they let events, people or money move between groups. It sits under Bridges, Not a Hub. If the network is "the sum of agreements between pairs", this pattern decides how a pair's agreement is born.
Tensions
- Growth wants instant connection.
- Trust is built face to face.
- Stewards' time is scarce, so the call must be worth it.
- Hidden: a growth chart counts connections, not relationships. "One-click connections make networks wide and shallow."
Forces the design applies
- slow on quicken ↔ slowthe pace of connecting: a button alone opens nothing, and a call comes first
- ground on abstract ↔ groundthe bridge, grounded in a real call between the two stewards
- persist on persist ↔ fadethe date of that call, part of the bridge forever
- contract on expand ↔ contractthe first flows: every kind starts on 'I approve each'
Solution
No connection opens from a button alone. The two people who hold each side meet first, the connection keeps the date they met, and what flows starts narrow and widens after the meeting.
The generative parameter is what counts as meeting, and what of the meeting persists. TrustFlow counts a call between stewards, confirmed with a date that stays on the bridge, and starts every kind on "I approve each" until the stewards loosen it. Another context might count a visit, a shared event, or a note both sides sign. The request carries a reason ("Say why you would like to meet"), and the research note models the call as the bridge's provenance: "the two membranes (one per side) plus the call that opened it, recorded as provenance."
ask to meet, with a reason ──▶ call ──▶ bridge opens
│ └ the call's date stays on it
before the call: nothing flows └ every kind starts on "I approve each"Acts
- Strengthens: commune (the stewards meet as people first), cocreate (after talking, they set what flows together).
- Weakens: follow, the one-click, one-sided connection.
- Gap this surfaced: meet and commit. Commune comes close to meeting, but the act this pattern turns on is a commitment. James's action language is built on commitments, and the act list has no word for one.
Qualities it gives the place
AliveHonestUnhurried
Refuses
- Friend-request spam Requests that cost the sender nothing and the receiver their attention.
McLuhan check
- Enhances: the depth of each connection.
- Retrieves: the handshake and the letter of introduction.
- Obsolesces: the friend request and the one-click connect.
- Reverses into: a ritual checkbox. In the prototype the meeting is on the honor system: "We have met on a call" is a box anyone can tick. Or a bottleneck, a network that grows only as fast as its stewards can take calls.
Required companion: the call must be worth the steward's time. The request says why, "their steward sees it with your request", and the call is "a step you confirm, not a formality you skip."

Seen in
- TrustFlow (v1 and v2 prototypes): "A bridge opens only after the two stewards have met. The date of that call is part of the bridge forever." v1 already had it: "A channel opens only after the two stewards have met on a call and each set what they will share." The request screen: "Your side starts with everything on "I approve each", and you can loosen it after you meet." Agents can't skip it: "Bridges open after a call between humans."

In nature Before a fungus and a root form a partnership, they exchange chemical signals (strigolactones from the root, Myc factors from the fungus). Without that exchange, the connection doesn't form.
